HI! WE’RE KAT & PHIL, VALUE TRAVELING MARINE SCIENTISTS DOING OUR BEST TO MAINTAIN AN ECO-FRIENDLY LIFESTYLE. THIS BLOG SERVES AS A PLATFORM FOR US TO SHARE OUR EXPERIENCES WITH THOSE WHO WANT TO DO THE SAME!
Our Mission
Staying Afloat blog offers value travel inspiration to the world traveler who isn’t quite on a backpacker budget but far from a luxurious traveler. As US East Coast based marine scientists by day, the authors also cover a lot of ground from Massachusetts to North Carolina. Our travels have brought us all over North America, the Caribbean and Europe and our sustainable travel philosophy focuses on eco-tourism spots, as we love to spend time outdoors. The blog includes a sprinkle of fun ecological facts and occasional reminders of the importance of being environmentally responsible. Our goal is to influence shoestring travelers who want to see the world to do so sustainably.
‘Staying Afloat’ is a motto that we hold dear as we use it often. We encounter many challenges in life that require us to maintain a level of buoyancy. Whether actively working offshore or trying to pay the bills, staying afloat is a very real part of our daily lives. Our goal is to play with the core theme of floating as we share all of our adventures with you! We’ll provide tips and tricks along the way on how to stay buoyant while getting the most out of life and best value travel.
More About Us
We grew up in Southern Ontario, spending much of our childhood exploring and playing in many of the lakes the Great White North has to offers. Inspired by water, we chose career paths in biology that brought us both to the Northeast US coastline; paths that eventually converged in 2011. Kat spends a significant amount of her time working along the Massachusetts shoreline, while Phil spends most of his days working in North Carolina.
Our relationship is unlike many in that we don’t spend a lot of time together (see our post on 10 Ways We Keep Our Long Distance Relationship Afloat), but when we are reunited, we take full advantage of the 100s of miles of coastline that separate us.
We love to travel and make every effort to include water in everything we do. Between the two of us, we’ve dipped our toes in Lakes Erie , Ontario and Huron. We’ve sailed the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, swam in the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, Albemarle Sound (NC), Straight of Georgia (BC), Mashpee/Wakeby Pond (MA) and St. Lawrence River. Our travels have taken us to the Gulf of Alaska, the Bering Sea, Hudson Bay, Laguna Grande (PR) and many of Algonquin’s lakes.
