Welcome to Staying Afloat!

HI! I’m Kat—a marine scientist by trade so I spend a LOT of time on the coast. I’m also very passionate about preserving the amazing natural world that makes up our planet and encourage my audience to do the same!
Staying Afloat started as a way for me to share my coastal travels with friends and family as I started to explore this amazing world. A place where I could share my love for photography and storytelling. Initially a budget travel blog, I realized the overlap between budget and eco-conscious lifestyle. The minimalist ways of sustainable travel are a great way to save money at the end of the day. Staying Afloat offers value travel inspiration to the world traveler who isn’t quite on a backpacker budget but far from a luxurious traveler.
I grew up in Southern Ontario. There I spent much of my childhood exploring and playing in many of the lakes the Great White North has to offers. Inspired by water, I chose a career path in biology that brought me to Atlantic coast.
As a US East Coast based marine scientists by day, I’ve covered a lot of ground. My work has taken me from Maine to Alaska and beyond. My personal travels have taken me across North America, the Caribbean and Europe, with a focus on eco-tourism. I love to spend time outdoors. The blog includes a sprinkle of fun ecological facts and occasional reminders of the importance of being environmentally responsible. My goal is to influence shoestring travelers who want to see the world to do so sustainably.
‘Staying Afloat’ is a motto that I hold dear. I use it often as I encounter many challenges in life that require maintaining a level of buoyancy. Whether working offshore or trying to pay the bills, staying afloat is a very real part of my daily life.

Now based on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a truly magical, natural wonder of the east coast. I have found a place where I can incorporate the outdoors and water in everything that I do. I love sharing my adventures, be they near or far. And helping my audience to more deeply understand the destinations they explore continues to be a goal. So bookmark this page and let’s enjoy the journey together!
