perfect gifts for the marine biologist in your life

With another gift giving holiday upon us, you may be on the search for the perfect gift(s) for the marine biology nerd in your life. Don’t stress – we’ve got your [hump] back! We’ve sought out various ‘marine biology’ themed gifts, each with an added personality characteristic in mind. Whether you are shopping for Valentine’s Day, a birthday, Christmas, Hanukkah or any other gift giving occasion, you’ll want to ‘favourite’ this page for future reference. Check out these gifts for the marine biologist in your life!

For the Foodie

We love the creativity behind all of ‘Fred and Friends’, marine animal themed items (this is the first of several). This Rhode Island based company always provides a good laugh with their whimsical designs. Keep reading for more fun day to day tools, like these silicone pot holders, from them. Or try something a little more traditional with these pot holders or this vintage toothpick holder.

For the Eco-Conscious Nerd

Banning the use of plastics is one of the hottest topics these days, and for good reason! We guarantee these gifts for the marine biologist in your life will be a hit.

Many of the single use plastics like ‘Ziploc’ bags, cling wrap and straws we use end up floating around in the ocean and presenting digestion hazards to our beloved ocean wildlife. Ever heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? It is now joke! How about the turtle that was captured with a plastic straw coming out of it’s nose (this one isn’t for the faint of heart)? We can all afford to drastically cut back on our one use plastics so here are a couple reusable options for you and your ocean loving sweetie.

These reusable food pouches are intended to replace the traditional plastic snack bag. They come in a variety of patterns, and are dishwasher safe. Ingenious! The same company also produces paper sandwich bags, so you can go completely plastic free!

If you are a habitual straw user and haven’t already. you should definitely invest in some reusable straws. These are actually a great gift for anyone you may be gifting to in the coming year! We’ve had ours for a couple years now and Phil swears he can “taste the cold” more than ever before. Buying these in multipacks also allows you to stash them in various locations, like the car and your bag. We took them with us on our trip to St. Croix and asked any wait staff to hold off on the plastic straws with our drink orders.

For the Caffeine Lover

Whether the marine biology nerd in your life is a tea or coffee drinker (or both!), there many options out there as well. ‘Fred and Friends’ have also released a line of animal tea infusers including a narwhal, octopus, sea turtle and this cutie (Kat’s personal fave!):

There is also a wide collection of mugs available online including this fun play on words:

For the Happy Hour Enthusiast

Whether your love’s poison of choice is a cocktail or wine, here are a couple fun kitchen accessories to enhance any ocean lover’s happy hour! ‘

Fred and Friends’ are also known for their fun ice trays. They’re the perfect accent to these whiskey glasses. And though these wine glass stem markers look like a ‘Fred and Friends’ product, they are actually by ‘True’. An alternative to those noisy metal charms, we love these and use them daily. Although these charms are QUITE stunning.

For the Organized One

These next couple gifts for the marine biologist pretty much speak for themselves in utility and are perfect for work, in the lab or for the home office.

For the Fashionista

These first ones fall under the ‘aesthetic’ category, with their modern design. You can personalize this gift with hand picked, easy to care for succulents from your local green house (or garden, depending on your whereabouts).

‘Bungalow 360’ is widely known for it’s excellent collection of ocean themed fabrics which they use to produce change purses, wallets, cosmetic bags, totes and much more. Their cotton canvas is very hardy and can be found covered in sea horses, octopi and walrus’ to name a few. Kat has the sea otter wristlet (and loves it!).

These socks by ‘Sock it to Me’ are great quality! Kat’s had them for a couple years now and the elastics are still in great condition. They are nice and tall (just below the knee) and perfect for this time of year! How about these though.

Lastly, these leggings are absolutely stunning! Created from post-consumer plastic bottles that have been melted down to thread that was woven into the fabric you see in the final product. You can feel good about purchasing these ocean themed leggings as 10% of your purchase goes toward the Marine Megafauna Foundation. Since 2009, they’ve been protecting the large marine species that frequent the Mozambican coastline. The leggings come in several patterns including sailfish, tiger shark and sea turtle.

That about wraps it up! And we’ll bet you’ll have one happy marine biologist on your hands after this upcoming holiday 😉 Happy gifting!

I have a serious love for fun and unique tea steepers, so that seahorse instantly caught my attention! Why use a boring silver tea ball when you could use something like that and bring a little extra joy to your day? Right?

There are so many different ones out there Britt! Completely agree with you in bringing a bit of fun to the tea steeping experience. Cheers!
