Do you love to travel? Looking for a unique way to display your favourite travel quote? Then look no further! This fun and easy travel quote craft is perfect a rainy day!
What You’ll need
- wooden pallet
- saw (any kind will do, but be sure to practice safety first!)
- assorted acrylic paints & brushes
- your favourite travel quote
Step 1: Cut up your pallet
You’ll need to start by obtaining the pieces of wood you’ll be using for each word you’re going to create. You can of course go out and buy new pieces of wood, but pallets can be found mostly anywhere these days for free! (This is after all a budget blog.) Not sure where to look? Check your local Craigslist or Facebook Yard Sale page; you’re sure to find some kicking around. Used pallet pieces also add an extra bit of charm to this easy travel quote craft.
When cutting up the pallet, you’ll want to aim just before the joint where the horizontal pieces meet the edge pieces (pictured below). As with any time you are using tools, it is important to rock eye protection and gloves to minimize injuries 😉
How many pieces you cut is entirely up to you! If you’re undertaking this easy travel quote craft project in the first place, you probably have a quote in mind. It’s worth cutting all of the pieces available to you from the pallet so that you have extra. This way, you can continue to make more as time goes.
Step 2: Paint your Words
Depending on your preference and the condition of the pallet you used, you can start painting! If the wood appears quite dirty, you can use water or a wood cleaner to brighten it up. We used some weathered pieces for added effect. You can also prepare the pieces of wood with a base coat or two of primer for a cleaner canvas. As you can see, we went for the weathered look and painted directly on the wood. This approach tends to preserve a more organic, natural look.
If you are looking for some inspiration, there are plenty of travel quotes, fonts and accents available via a quick Google Images. Kat is artistically inclined and free-handed all of the signs you see here, but don’t sweat it, you’ve probably undertaken this project with the knowledge that there was a level of craftiness involved. Plus, it’s more personal because you’ve put your own, personal spin on it! Also, you don’t necessarily need to add pictures, you can simply use words. This is craft freedom at it’s best!
You’ve got this!

What a great DIY! I love this and so simple!!!
Thanks Kelly! Really enjoyed making this, and sharing the ‘how to’.
Very cute! My husband does a lot of woodworking so I’m going to need to steal some of his scrap wood and give this project a go!
Thanks Kelsey! It’s amazing the things you can do with some scrap wood even. Happy crafting!!
I’ve been dying to create a fun quote DIY home decor piece as I’m a huge lover of words, but I just can’t decide on one quote, there’s too many that I love! Hopefully someday I’ll be able to make up my mind and pick just one 😅🙊
We hear that Indya! It is definitely not an easy decision to make. Ultimately, you could recreate several quotes if you wanted to… maybe one per room?? Too much? We think not. Happy crafting!
The whole idea is so innovative. Loved it.
Thanks so much Hina! We think so too 😉
Talk about creative! This is such a great DIY idea, and it makes me want to play around with decorating pallets more often. I love the concept of a cute travel quote. You did such a great job with yours!
Thanks so much Stephanie! It was simple and fun to do. Decided to fill the time we would be traveling with some fun décor items to celebrate the travels we’ve taken.
This is cute! As a Disney fan I’d probably have to pick some sort of Walt Disney quote or something from the theme parks – maybe “to all who come to this happy place, welcome.”
That would totally work too Becky! You’ve definitely got a good one there 😉 Share it with us if you end up making one, we’d love to see it!
I love that quote! The world is a book…
Maybe it’s an atlas!
According to the original quote, it’s a UNIVERSE!! Either way, it’s a great quote, agreed!
This is a really cool do it yourself blog post. I am an avid travel blogger but these are some travel ideas worth implementing!
Thanks Ambuj! We really enjoyed this little activity. It can be a little tricky to “arts and crafts” as a traveler, but we tried to keep it low key and portable. Happy travels!

Isn’t it Gina? We love how easy the process was and how flexible the design can be.
